Brazil negotiates with Peru to build hydro plants

Brazil negotiating with Peru on plan to construct up to 15 hydroelectric power stations

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Brazil's mines and energy minister says Latin America's biggest country is negotiating with Peru to build as many as 15 hydroelectric power stations in that Andean nation.
The private Agencia Estado news agency and other local media quote Edson Lobao as saying the plants would have a combined output of 15,000 megawatts. Eighty percent of the energy would go to Brazil, and 20 percent to Peru.
Lobao says talks are expected to be wrapped up next year. He says the first five plants, requiring an estimated investment of up to $13 billion, are expected to start generating 6,000 megawatts of electricity in 2015. Spudberry

Brazil Property News: Rio de Janeiro hotels to get $160 million funding boost

Those with Brazilian property in Rio de Janeiro will be pleased to hear that the hotel industry could receive as much as $160 million (£95.2 million) for refurbishments.

The financial injection is aimed at helping the city's bid for the 2016 Olympics and its ability to welcome international visitors to top-quality accommodation and facilities.

Hazardous Waste Returned

Hazardous waste labelled as recyclable plastics has been returned to the UK after being discovered by Brazil's environmental regulators.

The shipments of 81 containers totaling around 1,500 tons of waste were said to contain syringes, nappies and condoms.
Brazil's Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources insisted the waste was sent back to the UK and made a formal complaint.
